With over 70,000 citizens, the City of Waukesha, Wisconsin is the third largest in the state of Wisconsin. The City has built a Web site on the Lockstep Solutions proposed Web content management (WCM) platform and is taking advantage of key functionalities built into the platform. The City has received an outstanding reception from the public after the WCM implementation.
Feeling that their Web site did not allow for standardization, enable departments to safely edit web content including advanced changes, the City of Waukesha needed to completely overhaul their content management. They set out to implement a Web site that would depict the true beauty of the city and could be managed by web liaisons in departments, the true owners of the web content.
Before they began utilizing Liferay based Lockstep Solution, multiple IT contacts were in charge of publishing all Web site content. With content being exchanged via email and in-person meetings, editing tasks became backlogged and the site content obsolete. With mandated timeframes for putting content on the Web site, it was imperative that departments be able to make edits directly to the site to meet these requirements. The city needed a WCM platform that would provide both out of the box functionality that could be customized for a unique look and feel in addition to being a platform to build custom solutions using workflows.
The City of Waukesha selected Lockstep Solutions proposed solution to design their intranet and public-facing Web site built on the Liferay CMS platform. The custom solution developed on the Liferay platform provided the City of Waukesha the feature set needed to keep the content of the Web site up to date, allow non-technical content experts to have ownership of editing, and customize out of the box features for a unique look and feel. Lockstep Solutions took advantage of Liferay’s journals to allow data to be easily added by editors and to be displayed in an organized, clean fashion on the site. Liferay’s advanced taxonomy and search functionality was customized to meet their needs and allows for easy navigation of the site. Lockstep Solutions implemented and customized Liferay’s look and feel, minutes and agendas, security model functionality, search web content or documents to provide secure access to the content. A City calendar utilizing a customized Liferay’s calendar control has also been implemented to meet the needs of the departments of the city and non-technical content experts can now meet their mandated timeframes for online content additions.
With over forty content editors making updates and edits to the site in real-time, the City has received outstanding response from residents visitors for its up-to-date content. Site traffic to the Web site has increased since the launch; citizens and visitors of Waukesha are finding the information they need on the site quickly and efficiently. The Web site is now a tool being utilized to identify and represent all of reasons to live, work, and play in Waukesha. When visiting the site, the audience segmentation on the homepage is clear in guiding site visitors to find exactly what they are looking for.
